Hi, I live in Cromwell(central otago), and I want to get a mobile broadband plan, because I might be travelling soon, plus I dont need a phone line. I was wondering what are the options, pros n cons of each. I want good internet speed( i know its usually slow with mobile broadbands, but Id like the best I could find), also was wondering what I can do with 4gigs per month(like how much time per day would that give me for on line surfing and such). Thanks in advance.

Samco, the Iridium network works everywhere, it is truly global.
Thuraya offers a Dual GSM mode which means the phone acts as a regular cellular when cell networks are available, and as a satellite phone when they are not. However, Thuraya does not offer 'satellite coverage' in NZ. |

Hi
You are right Locus and Sena, but this refers only to the Iridium satellite handsets. Sam, you can connect your satellite handset to a number of different media devices such as laptops, palm pilots, etc. Depending on what your requirements are. Inmarsat are releasing a new handset called the IsatPhone Pro this June which should retail for around NZ$700. This will also be capable of browsing the Internet via a media device. However, at this stage they are only offering speeds at 2400bps, although they will work on the I4-satellites so theoretically may offer X-Stream which is guaranteed streaming rates of up to 484kbps. Keep an eye on their website http://www.inmarsat.com/Services/Land/IsatPhone/?language=EN&textonly=False: one things for sure, we are in for some exciting times ahead in the satellite communications sector. |

Hi
You are all right, well to be more correct, you are all partially right. There are a number of different 'networks' for satellite phones, much like cellular phones. The most notable are Iridium, Inmarsat, and Thuraya. The LEO or Low Earth Orbiting satellites Sena refers to are the Iridium constellation. 66 LEO satellites orbit the earth at an altitude of 800km and at a speed of 16,000mph, they roughly orbit the earth every 100 minutes. The Thuraya and Inmarsat network work on geostationary satellites, that is, they are in a fixed position roughly the same distance where the gravity meets the same 'pull of space' and thus require little positioning to maintain their position. I hope this helps to clear things up. For more information please visit www.satconnections.co.nz |

![]() I've just returned to NZ. I'm looking at Naked DSL because i'm tired of thieving phone companies. I'm astounded to see naked DSL costs more than phn and broadband combos. So my question is. Who has the cheapest phn line, and broadband or Naked DSL? |

I think that this companies are going to put their networks in Australia in a short period of time and because of this they will get enough support from this party.
